Sorakaya Pappu (Bottle Gourd)


Toor dal-1 cup
Bottle gourd-1cup
Curry leaves- 4 nos
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds-1/2 tsp
Asafoetida- a big pinch
Green chillies-4 nos(cut int two pieces)
Red chillis-2 nos
Turmeric powder-2 pinch
Oil-3 tsps


Take dal in a bowl and wash it.Add some water to the dal and keep it aside.Wash,peel and cut the bottle gourd into medium size pieces.

put separetlly dal and bottle gourd pieces place in the bowl, add water  to the dak bottle gourd.place in a pressure cooker and cook for 4 whistles.

Remove the dal when the pressure cooker cools down.


Heat a pan and oil to it.When the oil is hot add the mustard seeds,cumin seeds, and fry till they splutter.Now add the asafoetida and curry leaves fry well.

Now add the cooked bottle gourd pieces ,cooked dal and salt mix well .Let it boil.

If required add some water to get the right consistency.

Bring it to a boil and then transfer to a serving bowl.

Serve hot with plain rice and any pickle as side dish.
